Meet a pint-sized version of the app-enabled Star Wars BB-8 Droid.
Built by robotics company Sphero, this detail-rich droid stands at a height of 10-cm and comes with an adaptive personality with quirks and sounds that continue to change as the kids (or adults) play with it. Set the BB-8 Droid to patrol the home and watch as it starts to maneuver through the living room autonomously. Plus, it is even possible to view and create holographic recordings. Its head is magnetically held in place and can pull away to form a separate piece from the main body. To operate the Droid, use a tablet or smartphone and pair with an app to give access to on-screen controls and a choice of pre-programmed or personally input movements. BB-8 has the ability to learn from its past mistakes with intelligence to understand its environment through the process of bump mapping (much the same as robotic vacuum cleaners). A Star Wars BB-8 Droid can be more than a toy – it can also become a companion.
